There's no watering down the intensity of this beauty trend

It might have come out earlier this month, but we’re still thinking about 2025 Pinterest Predicts report – aka, social media’s treasure trove of trends for the year ahead. And while we loved the bright bold hues of aura beauty, we’re also rather intrigued by the darker aesthetic of the sea witchery movement. ‘POV: You’re in your sea witch era. And it’s so much more than seashells and starfish,’ declares the image-sharing platform. ‘In 2025, Gen Z and Millennials will dive head-first into sultry siren make-up, wet wavy hair and moody mermaid manicures from first light to moonlight.’

Piqued your interest? Here’s how to tap into the trend, according to beauty experts.

What Is The Sea Witchery Trend?

As Pinterest described, the sea witchery trend uses moody, oceanic hues and details to curate a siren-mermaid hybrid look. ‘The sea witchery trend is all about channelling your inner sultry siren, featuring wet wavy hair and mermaid inspired manicures,’ explains Sophie Vongkhamsao, an in-house beauty and content specialist at Fresha. ‘This trend is the resulting collision of a variety of looks, such as the witchcraft aesthetic, and a general fascination associated with mermaids. Mythical elements are expected to pop up across nail trends in 2025, such as shell patterns and scaly textures.

‘Picture global music icon Charli XCX, with her signature wet-look hair and smudged eyeliner. The trend is a celebration of being dark, edgy and mysterious.’

So, when it comes to makeup, think pearlescent shimmers, underpinned by deep purples, teals and chromes. In its report, Pinterest noted a 90 percent increase in searches for ‘dark mermaid make-up’, as well as a 695 percent lift for ‘dark siren make-up’.

How To Recreate The Look With Makeup

Fancy giving the aura beauty trend a go? Sophie breaks down the look in six steps:

Base

‘Start with an illuminating primer to create a smooth and radiant base for your makeup,’ recommends Sophie. ‘Once your skin is prepped, apply a luminous foundation and use a concealer to cover any blemishes.’

Contour

Then you can start to add structure, light and shadow, Sophie tells us. ‘Lightly contour your face with a cool-toned bronzer to add subtle definition. Apply a highlighter to the high points of your face (cheekbones, brow bones, the bridge of your nose and Cupid’s bow) to give a soft but subtle glistening effect.’

Blush

Now it’s time to introduce some colour. ‘Use a blush with a slight shimmer in shades like soft pink, peach, or coral,’ says Sophie. ‘Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards towards your temples.’

Eyes

Your eyes will be a focal point to a sea witchery makeup look – so expect to make a statement. ‘Choose eyeshadows in oceanic shades such as blues, greens, and purples,’ instructs Sophie. ‘You can also incorporate shimmery or metallic shades by adding them to the inner corner of the eye.

‘For a more mystical look, consider using a metallic or glitter eyeliner,’ she adds. ‘Apply a coat of volumising mascara to your upper and lower lashes, and black or dark blue eyeliner to line your upper lash line.’

Lips

Keep the look cohesive with your lip colour choice. ‘For the lips opt for dark, rich shades like deep plum or berry,’ suggest Sophie.

Finishing Touches

And then it’s just the finishing touches left on your sea witchery look. ‘Finish with a dewy setting spray to lock in your makeup to make sure it lasts all day and night.’
