The Square Bob Is Making A Comeback This Season

Back to the classics: square bobs are making a triumphant return to the salon.
With so many different bob trends out there, it can be difficult to judge which one is right for you. When in doubt, stick to the classics. Our pick? A super sleek square bob.
What Is A Square Bob?
‘A square bob is a blunt, structured bob haircut with a strong, even shape that creates a squared-off effect,’ explains Zoe Adams, International Artist at Taylor Taylor London. ‘It typically falls around the jawline or slightly longer, featuring sharp edges and minimal layering for a bold, modern look.’
It’s the bob’s ‘precision and strong geometric shape’ that makes it stand out from other short styles, Zoe adds. ‘It avoids excessive texturising, giving it a sleek, statement-making appearance. This makes it feel more contemporary and polished compared to more traditional or tousled bob styles.’

And at a time when sleek, precision cuts still remain a popular staple in the salon, it makes sense that the square bob would have (yet another) major moment. ‘The cut aligns with the current trend of structured, minimalistic styles that feel both effortless and chic,’ notes Zoe. ‘It’s also highly versatile, working well with sleek, polished looks or more relaxed, undone textures. Plus, with the rise of 90s and Y2K-inspired fashion, sharp, bold cuts are making a strong comeback.’
Who Suits This Cut?
Zoe advises that the square bob ‘works particularly well for oval and heart-shaped faces, as it enhances balance and symmetry’ – although when it comes to hair types, anyone can wear the cut. ‘This hairstyle is ideal for straight to slightly wavy hair, as this helps maintain its sharp structure,’ she tells us. ‘Those with very curly or fine hair can still rock it, but they may need extra styling or layering adjustments to suit their hair’s natural movement.’
How To Ask For A Square Bob In The Salon
‘Ask for a blunt, structured bob that falls around the jawline or slightly longer, with minimal layering and clean, straight edges,’ recommends Zoe. To help get your idea across to a stylist, she also suggests ‘showing reference photos to ensure clarity on length and shape.
‘If you have naturally curly or thick hair, discuss how to adjust the cut to suit your texture while maintaining the squared-off look,’ she adds.

How To Style A Square Bob
When it comes to styling, Zoe tells us we can take a few different routes.
First up: a sleek, polished look. ‘While the hair is damp, use a hair oil to add shine and smoothness while protecting against frizz,’ advises the stylist. ‘Follow with a cream before styling for a super sleek finish.’
For more lift and volume, Zoe recommends using ‘a hair mist at the roots before blow-drying to give fine or flat hair extra body. If you want a bit more hold, a styling mousse is great for creating bouncy, structured volume.’
What Next?
As for the future, Zoe sees the square bob ‘evolving with variations in length and texture. Maybe a shift towards slightly longer, collarbone-grazing versions for a more relaxed take – or more choppy, undone variations that maintain structure but with added movement. I’ve also noticed a rise of micro and ultra-short square bobs, which make an even bolder statement.’
