We're seeing this Stevie Nicks-approved style everywhere this season

First it was the wolf cut, then the shag – now we’re going full 70s rockstar with the resurgence of the Stevie cut. Here’s how salon experts are styling it in 2024.

What Is A Stevie Cut?

‘As the name suggests, this is a hairstyle inspired by Stevie Nicks, whose 70s hair was iconic,’ explains Anna Wiig, hair stylist, colourist and founder of wiig. ‘Similar to the shag cut, the Stevie cut has the full, face-framing fringe, but with longer, soft layers. It can also have slightly less volume than the 70s look.’

Now, the internet is no stranger to a nostalgic beauty trend – and with the rise of mod style pixie cuts, Birkin bangs and The Rachel, it was only a matter of time until we turned our eye back to the style icons of the 70s. And Stevie Nicks, with her messy curls, wild fringe and rockstar attitude, is the perfect place to start.

TikTok has, naturally, already taken to the trend with gusto. It’s here that you’ll find over 31.7 million videos on the Stevie cut, showcasing the ways the hairstyle can be adapted for modern life. But, besides the nostalgia, what makes this cut a winner? ‘I feel like people are really loving layers and movement at the moment,’ muses Anna. ‘With this in mind, this style really has it all – plus an amazing woman behind the look.’

Who Suits This Hairstyle?

It might seem like a tricky haircut to pull off, but Anna emphasises it can be tailored to suit almost anyone. ‘The main focus is the fringe, so you need to ensure you have the right level of thickness to achieve the look,’ she says. ‘An alternative could be to do curtain bangs, particularly if a full fringe can feel a bit daunting.’

However, the stylist also tells us that long hair is a must: ‘This style also works best for those with longer hair and also who have a bit of volume, as fine hair will go stringy and flat.’

How To Ask For A Stevie Cut In The Salon (& What To Expect)

‘When in the salon, you should ask for super face-framing layers and full layers throughout,’ recommends Anna. ‘Definitely decide what your limits are in terms of how full you want the fringe beforehand. It can be quite full or feathery. As always, a photo is always best.’

Anna explains that your stylist will bring the Stevie cut to life by creating lots of layers. ‘This cut is best achieved with a razor,’ she says. ‘This will give the amazing soft texture and a more lived-in layered look.’

How To Style A Stevie Cut

As Anna has mentioned, the focal point of this cut is the fringe. ‘When the hair is wet, I would recommend using a hair dryer and brush to style the fringe first,’ the stylist suggests. ‘Depending on your hair type, you could then use a curling tong to add some waves, finishing off with a texturizing spray.’

What Next?

As for the future of the Stevie cut, our expert sees it gradually getting even softer over time. ‘I can see the fringe being shorter and having more pieces,’ Anna muses. ‘So it won’t be so heavy on the forehead.’
