Standing Pilates is the new big thing

If fitness sits top of your list of goals this year, then listen up. We have intel that the next big fad in fitness comes from the Pilates space, in the form of vertical reformer classes. But what are they, and what are the benefits? We ask the experts.

What Is Vertical Reformer Pilates?

‘Vertical reformer Pilates is a cutting-edge evolution of traditional reformer Pilates, designed to deliver the same transformative benefits – toned muscles, improved posture, and enhanced flexibility – without the need for a bulky reformer machine,’ explains Catie Miller, founder of Barre Series. Catie, who is credited with coining the term, tells us the workout incorporates a Pilates stick, resistance bands and your own body weight. Those taking part in the class remain standing, taking part in ‘a dynamic, sweat-inducing session.’

But where did the idea come from? ‘The vertical reformer concept stems from the broader popularity of reformer Pilates, which has become a global sensation, as evidenced by over 145.5 million TikTok posts,’ says Catie. ‘Recognising the need for an accessible yet equally effective alternative to the reformer machine, I wanted to reimagine the workout for a more versatile, space-saving experience that mirrors the benefits of traditional reformer Pilates.’

What To Expect From A Class

So, what can we expect from a session? ‘A typical 45-minute vertical reformer class is a masterclass in controlled, full-body movement,’ explains Catie. ‘You’ll begin with a gentle warm-up to activate your core, followed by a sequence of standing exercises that use the Pilates stick and resistance bands to target your upper body, lower body and core. Expect to engage stabilising muscles, refine your balance, and finish with stretches that leave you feeling both energised and empowered.’

Vertical Reformer vs Mat Pilates vs Reformer Pilates

As Catie mentioned, it’s the standing element that puts vertical reformer Pilates in a lane of its own. ‘Unlike mat Pilates, which primarily focuses on core strength through floor-based exercises, or traditional reformer Pilates, which relies on a machine for resistance, vertical reformer brings the workout to your feet,’ she adds. ‘This standing approach uses dynamic resistance and your body weight to amplify muscle engagement, coordination and cardio intensity. It’s a full-body workout that challenges you in ways that go beyond traditional methods.’

What Are The Benefits Of Vertical Reformer Pilates?

Vertical reformer Pilates offers a host of benefits, Catie tells us. These include:

  • Sculpted and toned muscles through dynamic resistance training
  • Improved posture and core stability, thanks to the standing, balance-focused movements
  • Enhanced flexibility, coordination, and muscle engagement
  • A cardio boost that complements its strengthening elements, leaving you energised
  • Accessibility – no large equipment required, making it ideal for boutique studios or at-home workouts

Who Can Do It?

It’s recommended that you have a little experience with both barre and Pilates before trying out a vertical reformer session. ‘It’s best suited for those with prior barre experience, as the advanced movements require familiarity with balance and core-focused techniques,’ confirms Catie. ‘Completing at least 10 barre classes is recommended before diving in. Be prepared for a workout that will challenge muscles you didn’t even know you had and leave you with a renewed sense of strength and accomplishment.’
