Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes over the Fabergé design house
It’s not long now until the surprise sequel to Tim Burton’s cult classic film Beetlejuice hit cinemas. With spooky season on the horizon, the design team at Fabergé has been channelling its inner ‘ghost with the most’ and turned to the film’s iconic characters for a new fine jewellery collection. And, with both Burton and costume designer Colleen Atwood getting onboard the design process, these creepy collectibles have the film’s official seal of approval. Intrigued? Read on for the Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collection highlights.
Fabergé Launches Fine Jewellery Collection Inspired By Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
What’s the first thing that comes to mind at the name ‘Fabergé’? Beautifully bedazzled eggs, intricate lockets and colourful charms, maybe. Spooky sparkles? Not so much. But this season, the artist jeweller is adding a new string to its bow with a new fine jewellery collection inspired by the world of Beetlejuice.
And to give the collection that distinct Burtonesque look, Fabergé brought in the man himself. Tim Burton worked closely with Oscar-winning costume designer (and Burton’s long-time collaborator) Colleen Atwood, Fabergé’s head of design Liisa Tallgren and creative director Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, co-designing a series of fine jewellery pieces that play on the characters and costumes from both Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
‘In every partnership we forge, we look for like-minded care and attention to creativity and a fearless commitment to challenging the status quo, and in the process, offer something unexpected and surprising,’ commented von dem Bussche-Kessell on the collection. ‘Colleen and Tim are true innovators and creative geniuses in their storytelling, and together we have created a collection which is modern and humorous and pays homage to their work on the big screen. It has been an extremely harmonious collaboration, filled with pure joy all the way. I am very proud of what we’ve achieved together.’
‘Costume design and Fabergé go together like kindred spirits,’ added Atwood. Both are constantly changing and evolving, and each uses classic technology alongside more innovative techniques in the creative process with the ultimate goal of creating beauty and bringing joy to others.
‘I have immensely enjoyed the process of putting pencil to paper and watching our ideas evolve. There are no real barriers to bringing creativity to beautiful gems, each one with its own nuanced colour, and there are almost limitless possibilities with design. A quirky sense of fun is reflected in this collection and the hypnotic spirals and characterful motifs epitomise the spirit of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.’
Collection Highlights
Crafted from 18k white gold, the collection is comprised of a series of earrings, pendants, lapel pins, collar bars and rings – all inspired by the shape of a spiral, a motif that appears in many of Tim Burton’s films. In Beetljuice, the spiral comes to life through the characters Headworm and Sandworm. The gold straight and twisted collar bars, for example, feature the miniature heads of the Headworm, while the white gold spiral wrap rings feature pear-shared gemstones designed to resemble the shape of the Sandworm creature’s head.
The colour palette of the collection similarly takes its cues from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, settling on red, green and black to reflect the hues in the leading characters’ costumes. With this in mind, each piece in the collection features a mined emerald or ruby from Gemfields, a leading responsible miner that specialises in coloured gemstones. Fabergé notes that the emeralds were mined at Kagem Mining in Zambia, while the rubies came from Montepuez Ruby Mining in Mozambique.
‘I was inspired by the original Beetlejuice film (1988), in which a character called Betelgeuse, the Afterlife’s leading Bio-exorcist, appears as an eerie creature with a carousel head and spiral arms that unwind to form arms with mallets for hands,’ explained Tallgren. ‘Throughout the films, Betelgeuse is dressed in a black and white suit, so we have dressed our collection in the same style to epitomise this. The green glow of the Afterlife is reflected in the emeralds, and the red rubies are reminiscent of the red wedding dress and suit, both of which feature in one of Betelgeuse’s dreams. The world of Beetlejuice has mysterious black and white striped Sandworms with red eyes and green lips, again reflected in the use of rubies and emeralds, which have also inspired the spiralling snake rings. The collar bars in the collection are inspired by the Headworm, one of the forms that Betelgeuse takes to terrorise the living.’
And, of course, the Fabergé egg motif makes an appearance within the collection. A pair of white gold spiral earrings and pendants feature the egg design front and centre, decked out in emeralds or rubies, painted with red or green UV enamel and topped with white diamonds.
Speaking on the collaboration, Burton added: ‘This collaboration with Fabergé is a very exciting opportunity to merge the world of Beetlejuice with the legendary jewellery house – I am very honoured.’
