Going for gold

With celebrity guests including Cindy Crawford and Nicole Kidman in attendance, the Omega House pop-up is proving the hottest ticket in town during the Paris Olympics, says Juliet Herd.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaia Gerber got into the Olympic spirit as they celebrated Paris 2024 at Omega House in the heart of the city’s historic St Germain des Prés district.

The glamorous pair sealed the Swiss watch brand’s pop-up maison’s status as the hottest ticket in town – outside the actual sporting events, of course – as they mingled with other first-night luminaries, including American sprinter Gabby Thomas and French rapper Rim’K, who performed at the opening ceremony.

‘Paris is a city I adore thanks to my career in fashion,’ said Crawford, Omega’s longest-serving ambassador, having joined the brand in 1995. ‘To be returning here now, with my Omega family at the Olympic Games, is really a sentimental moment. I love that the House is right in the heart of this spectacular host city.’

Model and actor Kaia, 22, who wore a dazzling black mini dress teamed with Gucci slingbacks, added: ‘OMEGA always does everything to the highest standard. You can see it when they time the events at the Olympic Games, and you can see it in every detail of the House. I feel quite honoured to be here on opening night.’

Fellow ambassador Nicole Kidman also made it a family affair when she brought her 15-year-old daughter Sunday to Monday night’s Her Time event, celebrating women’s watchmaking of the past 100 years. ‘I’ve always loved working with Omega because of the versatility of the brand, whether it’s women’s watchmaking, the Olympic Games or James Bond,’ said guest of honour Kidman after touring the House. ‘It’s a joy to be here in Paris, to experience the sport and be with the brand on such a wonderful occasion.’

Set over multiple floors in the grand Hôtel de Poulpry, Maison des Polytechniciens, just steps from the Musée d’Orsay, the House pays homage to the brand’s 92-year history as official Olympic and Paralympic Games’ timekeeper. This will be the 31st time since 1932 that Omega has fulfilled the role and will involve measuring the action in an impressive 329 events, covering 32 different sports.

‘There’s always an incredible energy at the start of the Olympic Games, with so much anticipation for the weeks ahead,’ explained Omega president and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann. ‘OMEGA knows how hard these athletes have trained, and the many hours they have dedicated to their careers. It’s our honour to support them in Paris and be part of their history-making moments.’

Beyond the bustle of Paris, House guests will be able to kick back and relax as well as enjoy watching sporting highlights on big screens. Themed rooms include Timekeeping, showcasing modern Omega technologies, including the electronic starting pistol and photo-finish camera; Stadium, in which guests will be able to experience the thrill of being an Olympic champion; Speedmaster, featuring the brand’s history in space exploration; and Seamaster, an exhibition of current Seamaster diving watches.

Interactive elements are also spread throughout the House, ranging from photo opportunities and celebrity autograph wall to displays of Paris 2024 timepieces. By night, the location will be transformed for a series of VIP events and themed evenings.

Open until 10 August, the Paris edition follows the first Omega House that opened its doors at London 2012, followed by Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It’s the place to be seen, indeed!
