Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside
Opting to stay closer to home for your holidays for the foreseeable? The British seaside staycation has never been more appealing, but with so many beautiful beaches and hotels to choose from, where to choose? Rebecca Cox reviews Fowey Hall Hotel.
This summer, Fowey Hall in Cornwall is supporting the local community as it emerges from lockdown by hosting a market on its grounds every other Sunday. The market features an array of hand picked local artists and producers who share the hotel’s values of utilising local and sustainable produce. The market runs every other Sunday morning, 9.30am-12.30pm throughout the summer and is being brought to life with the help of former Vogue contributing editor Fiona Golfar, who launched The Little Shop in the grounds of the hotel last year, and Cathy St Germans, co-founder of Farms to Feed Us.
Fowey Hall Hotel Review
STAY
With a stunning position overlooking the Fowey estuary, Fowey Hall Hotel is a beautiful coastal manor a 10-minute walk downhill to the beach and Fowey town. One of the Luxury Family Hotels group properties, the hotel is a perfect combination of sophistication and child-friendly charm. The décor is clean and modern, with a large, modern games room, cinema and library, all packed with entertainment options for rainy days. The grounds (overlooking the sea) are the home to an adventure playground of fun for little ones, so grown-ups can sit on the terrace (with a glass of rose) watching children play and looking out to sea. The 36 bright and stylish rooms include 12 family rooms with the option of interconnecting rooms and suites, plus the option to add camp beds or cots for little ones.
The staff are welcoming and friendly, and guests can feel at ease with new social distancing measures in place, including hand sanitiser stations throughout the hotel, wide hallways and spacious dining areas with pre-booked dining times.
DO
Whether you want to get out and explore Fowey or Polruan across the estuary (children will enjoy the speedy ferry ride between the two, running every 15 minutes), or stay on the hotel grounds, there is no shortage of things to keep guests young and old entertained. There is a three-room games area where your teenagers will disappear to (never to be seen again) with video games, pool, table football and a cinema room. The library is stocked with a full selection of books for little ones, from classic picture books right up to young adult favourites. Of course, you should grab crab lines and run down to the beach, explore the coastal paths, skim stones and eat some Cornish ice cream, too. The winding streets of Fowey are screaming out to be explored, with art shops, bakeries, fudge shops and crab shacks a-plenty. The tiny aquarium filled with locally-caught crabs, lobsters and sea creatures is also well worth a visit for the little ones.
EAT
With so many local bakeries, chippies and crab shacks to try, your stay in Fowey is likely to be largely dominated by eating. But save some space to trial the delights on offer at Fowey Hall, too. The hot smoked mackerel on toast is a breakfast of champions, while the crab on toast from the dinner menu is how all meals should begin. Food not served on toast is available, too. As with other Luxury Family Hotels properties, this is fine dining made child-friendly, so expect short wait times and allowances for children playing with ninja turtles under the table.
THE FINAL WORD
This is a British family staycation at its best. Fine dining, on-site entertainment, and views for days.
