Hot New Hotel Openings 2022: Worldwide
Passalacqua – Lake Como, Italy
Opening: Now Open
Standing above the village of Moltrasio, leading all the way down to the lake’s shore, Passalacqua has played host to some of the world’s most brilliant minds in music, literature, art and politics from Napoleon Bonaparte to Bellini to Winston Churchill. And in 2022, maybe you? Built on land originally owned by Pope Innocent XI, the villa was constructed in the 18th Century by Count Andrea Luccini-Passalacqua, and now, Passalacqua has become the latest project for one of Italy’s most well-known hotelier families – the De Santis. Sister property to the lake’s Grand Hotel Tremezzo, it will offer total privacy, with 24 suites set within the main historic residence, the ancient stables and Casa al Lago located right on the lake, including the largest suite on Lake Como with a double-height balustraded music room where Bellini composed La Sonnambula in 1831.

Mama Shelter Paris La Défense – France

Mama Shelter launches its third Parisian property in the La Défense neighbourhood, the heart of the city’s financial district. Taking residence across 14 floors in the former Litman Tower, the hotel will house 211 bedrooms plus two all-day restaurants, a sports bar, a coffee shop and an arcade, whilst the trademark rooftop boasting stunning views of the capital. Mama La Défense will bring fun and warmth to the business district, for visitors and locals alike.

Gran Hotel Montesol – Ibiza, Spain

Located just off the main strip of the Paseo Vara de Rey, the Gran Hotel Montesol is a short distance from the historic Dalt Vila neighbourhood, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The building was first used by the Spanish government as a military barracks during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Countless people have stayed at the Gran Hotel Montesol Ibiza since its opening, including Orson Wells and Princess Caroline of Monaco.
The Emerald House – Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon continues to be one of Europe’s must-visit destinations thanks to its year-round sun, culture, beaches and more. The Curio Collection by Hilton opens its first Lisbon outpost with The Emerald House Lisbon, featuring stunning views of the River Tagus and the city. Rosewood Vienna – Austria

Housed in the former headquarters for Erste Group Bank AG, Rosewood Vienna will be situated on Petersplatz, one of the most famous squares in Vienna’s Old Town. Farmhouse58 – Johannesburg, South Africa

Based outside of Johannesburg near the Cradle of Humankind, Farmhouse58 is a hotel concept that pivots around nature, with a key focus on the local community. When being built, locals were able to upskill and the interiors were all sourced locally featuring artwork from the area. The hotel features silent zones, a meditative writing room and a library, with activities centring around nature and the community with guided hikes, regenerative farming sessions with the resident farmer and a scent workshop with a local perfumer, enabling guests to give back to the community whilst on holiday.

Mama Lisboa – Lisbon, Portugal

Close to the famous Avenida da Liberdade, Mama Shelter is arriving in Lisbon, with a playful and edgy new hotel. There will be 130 rooms with an focus on comfort, authenticity and cutting-edge design. Highlights include an all-day restaurant with its interior terrace and the brick oven pizzeria for locals to take away Mama’s famous pizzas. The rooftop will offer a dining destination with a bird’s-eye view of Lisbon and the Tagus.

Sea Breeze Santorini Beach Resort – Santorini, Greece

Curio Collection by Hilton just landed in Instagram’s favourite Greek paradise: Santorini. Whether it’s a family holiday or a romantic getaway that you’re looking for, Sea Breeze – with direct beach access, three swimming pools, two restaurants and an indulgent spa – has much to offer. Situated on the island’s south coast – with an expanse of turquoise waters endlessly in view – the white-washed hotel was designed with peace in mind: each of its 37 rooms have private terraces and either a private pool or hot tub. Castle Elvira – Puglia, Italy

Castle Elvira is the new luxury residence in Puglia, set on 37 acres of private parkland and boasting beautiful views of the local area as well as the venue’s gardens, citrus grove and olive grove. Guests can expect to find four en-suite guest bedrooms, two dining rooms, a piano room, cinema, roof terrace, 70 square metre swimming pool, jacuzzi and onsite café (did someone say luxury?). Castle Elvira’s sister residence Tower Elvira will also be opening in Spring 2022, allowing guests to increase occupancy to up to 20 people – making it an ideal venue for big events and celebrations.

Hotel Aristide – Island of Syros, Greece

The arts meet hospitality in this new boutique hotel located on the Greek island of Syros, which features an aesthetic that masterfully blends comfort, design and sustainability. A restored neoclassical mansion, Hotel Aristide features nine rooms, three plunge pool suites and a rooftop restaurant. Home to a permanent art collection, guests to the hotel can also expect to find all kinds of art decorating rooms and public spaces. A dedicated art gallery will also host temporary exhibitions and artist residencies. Guests wanting something a little more eco-conscious can also res assured with the hotel’s environmental regeneration programme, which includes a re-greening project in collaboration with Cyclades Preservation Fund to help offset the carbon footprint of guests’ travel to the island. Single-use plastic is nowhere to be found onsite, water is heated with solar panels and rainwater is collected in a cistern to be reused.

The Standard – Ibiza

One of the most hotly anticipated hotel openings of 2022, The Standard’s Ibiza branch fronts the island’s main plaza, Vara de Rey, and is described as a ‘year-round adult playground’. With a design conceived by Lázaro Rosa-Violán and interiors by Oskar Kohnen, the hotel boasts a distinct 60’s vibe that is both fun and classy. There are 67 rooms and suites to explore, as well as a restaurant (which transforms after hours into an intimate nightlife experience) and a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the island. Formentera is also just a short, 20-minute ferry trip away.

Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa – Malé, Maldives

Hilton has landed with a new flagship branch in one of the world’s most desired vacation destinations: the Maldives. Located on a lush tropical island in the North Malé Atoll – accessible via a scenic speedboat ride – the resort boasts 109 beach and overwater villas, each with a private pool and endless views of the surrounding turquoise waters. The Well at Hacienda AltaGracia – Costa Rica

LUMA Hotel San Francisco – California, USA

Villa Le Blanc Gran Meliá – Menorca, Spain

An outposting of Destination by Hyatt, 7Pines Resort Sardinia opened earlier this summer, located on the beachfront in Baja Sardinia, within the neighbourhood of Porto Cervo and a stone’s throw away from Costa Smeralda. Guests can choose from 76 rooms, including 8 junior suites and 20 suites, all with a choice of sea views or landscaped Mediterranean gardens. The 7Pines Yachting Services provides access to an exclusive fleet of luxury yachts for guests keen to explore the most beautiful coves and beaches of the Costa Smeralda or the archipelago of La Maddalena. The Pure Seven Spa – which won’t open until 2023 – will sit at the heart of the resort: an 800 square metre wellbeing centre with five treatment cabins for individual or couples’ treatments, plus steam room, sauna, emotional shower, ice room and outdoor areas for Kneipp therapy.

The Ned NoMad – New York, USA

Opening in New York this summer, The Ned NoMad marks the British brand’s first international site. Paying homage to the original architecture of Manhattan’s Johnston Building and featuring interiors from the SoHo House team, this new location will bring the hotel’s signature UK style across the pond, including a public bar and restaurant, as well as the members-only Ned’s Club, which features mezzanine and rooftop bars and a terrace restaurant.

Salt House Nantucket – Massachusetts, USA

Look for a little New England charm this summer? Salt Hotels – artful, boutique hotels in the US – have launched their latest edition, Salt House Nantucket. With 18 rooms, the 17th century replica style hotel – reminiscent of a classic B&B – is located in Brant Point, close to downtown Nantucket and steps to the beach. Complete with ample gathering space – including a lawn with lawn games and fire pits – the hotel is well-located for island exploring, with complimentary bikes available to guests. Launching as a pop-up experience this summer, the full launch will occur in summer 2023, with an exclusive members club, additional guest rooms, and a swimming pool.

Aman New York – New York, USA

In August, luxury hotel brand Aman expanded its global reach with the unveiling of a new urban sanctuary – and the rebirth of an architectural icon within the historic Crown Building – with Aman New York. The hotel offers guests Aman’s signature serenity through 83 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a wine library, jazz club, garden terrace, and a 25,000 square foot spa. For guests wanting to extend their stay permanently, Aman New York features the first Aman-branded urban Residences. The 22 private homes include all hotel amenities and range in size from one to six bedrooms, including a five-story penthouse.

This August, Teranka, a new independent boutique hotel, will open on the bohemian island of Formentera, offering an idyllic, island-hideaway experience in the Mediterranean. Pillows Maurits at the Park – Amsterdam, the Netherlands

This upcoming boutique hotel is the result of the restoration of a historic university building dating back to 1909. Centrally situated in Oosterpark, Maurits at the Park – Pillows’ seventh property – will house 88 luxury rooms and suites, a fine dining restaurant, a brasserie, two bars, a private lounge area, and several meeting spaces. 12|14 Stradom House – Krakow, Poland
Opening: Winter 2022
Housed in a magnificent fourteenth-century building steeped in rich history, and part of Marriot’s Autograph Collection, 12|14 Stradom House’s eclectic past includes time as a church, monastery, and a hospital. The 125-guestroom hotel has been reimagined into a botanical paradise, with a secret garden and its very own florist. Located between the Jewish and Royal Quarter it is in a prime location to explore the bustling city of Krakow, where old meets new, with Plant y Krakowskie and The Palace of Bishop Erasmus Ciolek Museum just around the corner.
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort – Punta Mita, Mexico

The first Four Seasons adults-only tented resort in the Americas is coming this December. This nature retreat will feature 15 luxury tents – all with their own plunge pool –nestled amid 48 forested acres on a private peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The biophilia-inspired design encourages guests to connect with nature: the indoor and outdoor seamlessly blend together; fabrics mimic the natural patterns found in the surrounding environment; the tents are designed (by Luxury Frontiers) to engage our natural desire to seek prospect, refuge, mystery and thrill with an open-air living room and separate bedroom flowing to a private plunge pool and expansive deck with a hammock and outdoor shower.

Portrait Milano – Milan, Italy

Portrait Milano is set to open after the success of Portrait Roma and Portrait Firenze. The five-star hotel will restore and revive the monumental spaces of Europe’s oldest seminary, second in the world, built in 1564 and long closed, despite its significance. The building, which boasts an impressive Baroque entrance designed in 1652 by Francesco Maria Richini, will be restored by Michele de Lucchi’s Studio AMDL.

White Desert – Antarctica

White Desert has announced its third camp, ‘Echo’ for the 2022 season, which starts in November 2022. Hot off the heels of its second camp, Wolf’s Fang, which launched this season, Echo will be a camp designed and inspired by space travel. The stylish eco-camp will feature six heated, cutting-edge polar pods complete with expansive floor to ceiling windows offering views of the dramatic landscape beyond. Crafted from composite fiberglass, the bedroom pods will be designed for two guests, with interiors featuring retro space-age detailing and luxurious furnishings. White Desert has designed Echo to be dismantled without a trace, leaving no more than a minor or transitory impact on Antarctica. Guests will have access to all White Desert activities, including fat biking, skiing, skidooing and 4×4 Arctic Truck driving as well as expertly guided hiking, ice-climbing and mountaineering. Antarctic interior highlights such as visiting Atka Bay to see the 28,000 strong Emperor Penguin colony.
