Welcome to the Lakes by YOO

A cocoon of luxurious living in the Cotswolds, the Lakes by YOO has never looked better, says Daisy Finer

Review: The Lakes By YOO, Cotswolds

STAY

Bedroom with sage green paneled walls and an orange and black gingham bedspread

Some have referred to the Lakes By YOO as ‘The Hamptons of the Cotswolds’, and it’s not hard to see why. Just a 90-minute drive from London, this bubble of natural serenity is likely almost too perfect for hardy ruralites. The private, 850-acre immaculate estate (complete with over 160 contemporary cool properties) is the vision of property entrepreneur John Hitchcox and globally revered designer Phillipe Starck. Most of the properties are owned as second homes by Londoners and celebs looking for a secure escape without all the responsibilities of an ageing stately home; Hitchcox himself has apparently described it as a ‘posh commune’.

For those who can manage to bag one of the Lakes By YOO’s few rental properties (they are hugely in demand), think sleek lodges with huge glass windows and many of the services of a hotel. Combining the design talents of the likes of Kelly Hoppen, Elle McPherson, Kate Moss and Jade Jagger, the varying types of accommodation combine an ecological approach with thoughtful, high-tech interiors and an upscale manifestation of glossy country living. Inside there are books, paintings, cozy blankets, plump beds and deep baths. Outside, enjoy expansive views of lakes, trees and skies. A bonus for guests is the wealth of activities just outside the door, and a full concierge and security team. This is not the quaint Cotswolds village experience; it’s the secret millionaire’s enclave.

Rentals range from one- and two-bedroom apartments to six-bedroom lodges, some complete with their own swimming pools or cinema rooms. All are beautifully designed in muted colours, with immaculate kitchens and bathrooms, decking areas, log fires, snazzy TVs and sound systems – and, crucially, enough personality to not feel too sterile (though you can bring your own candles and flowers to bring the photoshoot to life). The Lakeview Retreat comes with just that, as well as direct access to the water (kayaks and paddleboards provided). Meanwhile, the Manor House sleeps 12, welcomes dogs and is completed with not just its own pool but a Jacuzzi too.

All guests are greeted with a welcome hamper containing delectable lemon drizzle cake, sourdough bread and raspberry jam. You can order an Ocado shop to be unpacked before you arrive or dine on-site. Kitchens come with everything you need. For family gatherings, celebrations with friends or as a decadent hideaway from a mad world, you couldn’t really want for more.

DO

Spa with floor-to-ceiling windows

From teenagers to nature lovers, there really is something for everyone: open water swims, guided walks, paddleboarding, kayaks, fishing,  tennis courts, adventure camps, a trim trail and a zip wire. If all of that sounds a bit too keen, head to the spectacularly designed The Lakes Spa & Wellness Centre, complete with a cute retail area (swimsuits by Melissa Odabash and model David Gandy’s Wellwear Restore line), a Techno-gym, stunning indoor pool, sauna, steam, hot tub and studio space. The spacious treatment rooms are holistic hideaways, boasting exclusive wellness collaborations. Think treatments from Wildsmith Skin, to help your body repair and renew; facials from the legend that is Dr Barbara Sturm; resilience body treatments by Moss of the Isles; and a much-talked-about collaboration with COSMOSS, the wellness brand by Kate Moss, with its dawn and dusk rituals. Expect body brushing, ice-plunges, infrared blankets, creams, mists, butters and balms. Yes, please! The wellbeing element is further encouraged with retreats by experts such as Deepak Chopra.

EAT

What could be more magical than eating in a teepee dotted with fairy lights? The Lakes Bar & Kitchen is the very definition of cosy cool, offering an all-day menu of delights. Eggs Royale or smashed avocado on toast for breakfast; or, from noon, plates of wholesome classics, including pies, cheeseburgers and salads. Otherwise, you can dine in your rental or explore the local area with all manner of good gastropubs, as well as more modern offerings in both Cheltenham and Cirencester. You definitely won’t go hungry.

THE FINAL WORD

With its giant waterside cabins and apartments, this genuine but highly polished wilderness oasis is perfectly suited for a quick city-escape or special gathering with friends. It’s inspiring and inventive all in one.
