This historic country house has been beautifully restored
When the buzz of city life leaves you feeling overwhelmed, a countryside escape can be the perfect remedy. Just 90 minutes by car – or an hour by train – from London, The Beacon offers a tranquil retreat where even the busiest minds can relax and recharge.
Review: The Beacon, Tunbridge Wells
Perched on a hill along Tunbridge Wells’ Tea Garden Lane, this charming restaurant with rooms offers beautiful views of the Kent countryside, including the picturesque Happy Valley, home to a well-loved walking trail. With just seven guest rooms, The Beacon strikes the perfect balance between cosy intimacy and ample space to unwind and enjoy some well-deserved peace.
Recently refurbished to include guest rooms, The Beacon has quite a history. It has served as a public bathhouse, a refuge during World War II, and a private residence, once home to the founders and family behind The Beacon’s I’ll Be Mother Group.
STAY
Drawing inspiration from its countryside setting, each room at The Beacon embraces an ‘Arts & Crafts’ style design. Expect earthy tones and natural textures paired with indulgent touches like sparkling crystal chandeliers and a show-stopping brass bathtub. The pinnacle of luxury, however, is found in the Yarrow room, where a round copper bathtub nestled in the Princess Turret window offers breathtaking views of the landscape.
For those seeking extra privacy, the Summerhouse offers the perfect escape. Set apart from the main house, this rustic cabin features its own kitchenette and a bathtub on the terrace, where you can soak while taking in the views.
EAT
Before it was a restaurant with rooms, The Beacon focused on serving up delicious food – something it continues today, led by chef Scott Goss. In keeping with the rural surroundings, the menus feature seasonal ingredients, most of which are sourced from the local area.
The Garden Bar downstairs provides a relaxed dining experience, bathed in natural light with views of the gardens, a cosy fireplace, and a fully stocked bar. On sunny days, the terrace becomes the ultimate spot to dine while soaking up the scenery, perfect for a leisurely meal or a pre-dinner cocktail.
Upstairs, The Hearth offers a more refined atmosphere with its rustic farm-to-fork ethos. The candlelit dining room exudes historic charm, featuring a striking stained glass window and an antique fireplace that sets the tone for an unforgettable evening.
The menu is every bit as inviting as the surroundings. Expect hearty, flavour-packed dishes like Chalk Stream trout and Creedy Carver duck. For those with big appetites – or a love of sharing – the rib of Longhorn beef is an absolute standout. Even the side dishes are showstoppers, from sweet hispi cabbage to indulgently creamy mashed potatoes.
DO
At The Beacon, it’s all about savouring simple pleasures: excellent food, warm hospitality, and getting out in nature. Take a moment to relax, whether it’s with a coffee and a good book by the fire or a peaceful stroll through the gardens.
For those eager to explore, the hotel is surrounded by scenic walking trails. Tunbridge Wells also offers plenty to discover, from boutique shopping at The Pantiles – a popular spot, especially during the Christmas markets – to the Spa Valley Railway, a charming heritage railway that winds through Kent and Sussex.
THE FINAL WORD
If you’re looking for a countryside escape not too far from London, The Beacon does it best. With its peaceful surroundings, elegant interiors and excellent food, you’re guaranteed a delicious time.
