Review: The Club Hotel & Spa, Jersey
Craving that holiday feeling, but not keen on the hassle of foreign travel? Consider Jersey: the perfect compromise between staycation and trip abroad. Just an hour’s flight from Gatwick – or a four-hour ferry from Poole – Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, located just off the coast of France. Filled with vast sandy white bays, picturesque countryside and cosmopolitan towns, there’s plenty to explore on this pretty island. And though Jersey is part of the British Isles, the culture is a blend of French and English, so it feels distinctly different to the typical UK holiday hotspots. The leisurely pace of life helps you enter holiday mode too.
STAY
Stay at The Club Hotel & Spa, a five-star hotel in Jersey’s capital, St Helier. Though its location just off a main road isn’t the most idyllic, it’s handy being a five-minute walk away from bars, restaurants and shops – plus the beach is just down the road. The hotel features smart, stylish interiors, with wood panelling and a neutral colour palette. There are 38 bedrooms and eight suites, all boasting coffee-toned furnishings, sumptuous feather beds, large wardrobes, flat-screen TVs and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing natural light to flood in. Spacious granite bathrooms are stocked with ELEMIS products, some with both a bath and a power shower.
DO
Head to the hotel’s spa for some R&R. Though it’s fairly small, there are a number of thermal experiences to enjoy including a herbal steam room, experience shower, salt cabin and indoor pool – plus a relaxation room. An extensive range of treatments are available to book, the highlight being the Rasul treatment, designed to improve skin texture, detoxify and soothe – ideal for couples. There’s also a tranquil outdoor pool surrounded by lush greenery, which is particularly inviting on a sunny afternoon.
There’s plenty to explore around the hotel, too. Stroll down to the pedestrianised King Street for a spot of shopping and stop for brunch at Locke’s, then grab a drink at one of the bars on the square. Alternatively, head in the other direction to find Havre de Pas beach.
EAT
The centrepiece of The Club Hotel & Spa is Bohemia, the hotel’s glamorous Art Deco restaurant. Since opening back in 2004 Bohemia has won a whole host of awards – and, impressively, it has held onto its Michelin star for a whopping 17 years. Chef Callum Graham heads up the kitchen, which focuses predominantly on tasting menus. Choose between classic, vegetarian or pescatarian and prepare for a true gastronomical adventure. A meal here is a theatrical experience, with an endless stream of courses arriving at your table – each presented as a work of art. Expect intriguing flavour combinations and textures: white crab meat with jalapeño panna cotta and cucumber sorbet, for instance, and foie gras parfait with madeira jelly. Portions are just the right size to carry you through to the end, where you’ll be treated to a selection of ice cream presented on a wooden tower, followed by the finishing touch: milk chocolate Dulce de leche. All this comes with sommelier wine pairing.
For a more causal dining experience, head to Bohemia Bar, which serves up steaks, sandwiches and small plates, plus a lovely afternoon tea.
THE FINAL WORD
This boutique hotel is perfectly placed for a weekend exploring Jersey, complete with fine dining and spa experiences.
