Read on to find out which cities have received the most airtime in classic romance films and TV shows (making them, naturally, some of the UK’s most romantic places).
The Most Romantic Places In The UK, According To TV & Film
There’s nothing better than a dreamy romance set in a spectacular location. Whether it’s the breathtaking beaches in Poldark or the ravishing country estates in Downton Abbey, romance shows and films are shot in some seriously jaw-dropping places – but which UK cities can you see on screen?
According to a survey by travel site TourScanner, Yorkshire and Bath have been featured in the highest number of film and TV romances compared to other genres – making them some of the most romantic areas in the UK. Below you’ll find all of the biggest romantic filming locations, ranked.
Keighley, West Yorkshire
This charming market town nabs the top spot, having featured in the highest number of films and TV shows compared to other genres. The biggest titles include Jane Eyre (2011) and Wuthering Heights (1992) as well as 2022’s semi-fictional Brontë biopic, Emily. Keighley was also used as a filming location for Downton Abbey.
Fancy a visit? The town boasts a heritage railway line, a Grade II* listed former textile mill, and the handsome Cliffe Castle.
Bath, Somerset
The picture-perfect region of Bath has served as the backdrop for a whole host of romantic shows and films including Persuasion (2007), The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) and The Duchess (2008). Bath is a particularly romantic spot thanks to its association with Jane Austen – and it was also a huge part of the Bridgerton series.
Worthing, West Sussex
Just a few miles down the coast from Brighton, the lovely town of Worthing provides the perfect place for a romantic sojourn. The most notable film shot in the area is Empire of Light, which was released in 2022.
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
While it may be most famous for horse racing, Cheltenham is also a popular filming location: you’ll see it in the likes of Atonement (2007) and Emma (2020). Its Regency architecture makes it a particularly brilliant choice for period films.
Salisbury, Wiltshire
With its famous cathedral and gorgeous rural vistas, Salisbury provides plenty of filming fodder. It’s featured in a number of big titles like Sense and Sensibility (1995) and even The Princess Diaries (2001).
