Review: The Trafalgar St. James
STAY
Sitting on the corner of London’s most famous square, the Trafalgar St James, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, is a suitably grand setting for a cultured staycation in the city.
The stylish, comfortable rooms and airy suites combine a serene palette of greys and blues with an eclectic selection of art and prints (you’re likely to find yourself sharing with Mick Jagger…or at least, a life-size black & white photo). There’s also sleek bathrooms with Molton Brown toiletries, and, if you’re lucky, windows that look directly onto Nelson’s Column and the Trafalgar Square fountains.
DO
With a location as sublime as this, pretty much all of central London is at your fingertips. Looking for culture? You’re steps away from world famous artworks at the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery and a short walk from the Royal Academy (always a popular choice for exhibitions both classic and contemporary) – it’s also a quick trip over the bridge to the Tate Modern. Take a walk down The Mall – lying just around the corner – to visit Buckingham Palace and St. James’ Park, or head across the river to see the city from the London Eye.
The Best Art Exhibitions in London
If you’re lucky enough to visit once theatres have re-opened, catching a musical at the nearby West End or a play at the National Theatre is a must-do. Afterwards, take the scenic riverside route back to the Trafalgar St James to see the lights glinting off the Thames.
EAT
While there’s naturally much by way of fine dining establishments in the surrounding area, you won’t want to miss drinks and small plates at the Trafalgar St. James. On the seventh floor lies what must be one of the most atmospheric outdoor terraces in London: The Rooftop looks out over a skyline studded with world-famous landmarks that’s just as thrilling in the light of day as it is at nighttime.
It’s also where breakfast is served; guests can either sit in the sunny dining room or venture out onto the terrace (heaters are provided for chillier mornings) to watch the city waking up. In the interests of safety and in lieu of a traditional breakfast buffet, all diners receive a generous selection of buffet items, as well as a choice of breakfast dishes – think classic favourites like pancakes topped with fresh berries and smoked salmon scrambled eggs.
