There’s nothing quite like an escape to the Scottish Highlands. It’s eerie quiet, sobering mists and savage beauty routinely manifest themselves in daydreams across London’s Square mile.
And if there were to be a particular spot in Scotland, a particular Loch, it would have to be Letterewe Estate. This great sporting estate, stretches over 17,500 hectares of breath-taking mountains and lochs, four deer forests, and remains uninterrupted by roads or any trappings of modern life. Home to pine martens, golden eagles, wild goats and some 2,000 red deer, Letterewe is known as the ‘last great wilderness of Scotland’.
The house itself lies on Loch Maree, and can only be accessed by helicopter or boat, conjuring romantic memories for those who visited decades ago. If a boat arrived at night, it required the small oil lamp to be lit, summoning the boatman. If the weather was too thick, you’d be forced to spend the night at the Loch Maree Hotel, once patronised by Queen Victoria. Indeed, Letterewe plays host to a catalogue of tales.
You can hire out one of their lodges for a stalking or fishing weekend, perfect for family get-aways, stag parties or just an escape with whisky and walking. The main house can also be rented out for those wanting to do the Highlands in style. It’s crackling fires are well-deserved after a wee trek across miles of baron, rugged mountains, nursing those chilly lugs.
Good whiskey, delicious Scottish cheese and a heated game of snooker in the main house later and you can head to bed with a night cap rather than your iPhone.
Out of stalking or fishing season, the Estate is a magical retreat for those in need of a break from email inboxes and gluten-free brunches.
The trip above ‘the wall’ requires unlocking that dusty corner of your wardrobe, or skipping to the shops if you’re a highlands undergrad.
