BBC One’s beloved ‘80s detective drama has been rebooted, with all episodes of Bergerac series 1 now streaming on U

Everyone remembers Bergerac fondly, the BBC’s Jersey-set drama that ran from 1981 to 1991 and centred on the titular detective, DI Jim Bergerac (John Nettles). And now, almost 35 years after the series drew to a close (and more than 10 years after a reboot was floated), Bergerac is back, with Damien Molony taking the reins. But where was Bergerac filmed? Here’s everything you need to know.

Where Was Bergerac Filmed?

Bergerac was filmed in Jersey in summer 2024, with some additional filming taking place in Plymouth.

Described as a ‘modern reimagining’ of the classic nine-series detective drama, the Bergerac reboot is just as preoccupied with Jersey as the original: the Channel Island takes centre stage, with the action orbiting the isle and its politics. Jersey scenery we see on screen includes stunning beaches, fishing harbours, dramatic headlands and the bustling town centre of St Helier.

Bergerac Filming Locations

Specific filming locations in the Bergerac reboot include:

  • St. Ouen’s Bay and La Rocco Tower, a pretty beach on the island’s west coast, popular among surfers
  • La Pulente, a tranquil stretch of coastline in south-west Jersey, close to the Corbière Lighthouse and overlooked by the Atlantic Hotel
  • Bouley Bay, a cove on Jersey’s north coast popular with swimmers and home to the Bouley Bay Dive Centre
  • Royal Square in the heart of St. Helier, featuring the Royal Court and States Assembly (Jersey’s parliament, boutique shops, cafes and pubs)
  • Central Market in St. Helier, a Victoria open market building completed in 1882
  • St. Brelade’s Bay Hotel, a prestigious independent hotel dating back 160 years, set within five acres of stunning gardens; St. Brelade’s also starred in the original Bergerac
  • Gorey, a beautiful and relaxed fishing village with its pastel coloured cottages and alfresco restaurants, overlooked by the medieval battlements of Mont Orgueil castle
  • Archirondel, a bay with a pebble beach on Jersey’s east coast, home to the historic red-and-white Martello tower

Filming was supported by the Channel Island’s tourism board, Visit Jersey. CEO Tricia Warwick says the team were ‘delighted to welcome the cast and crew of Bergerac to Jersey last summer. The whole team, including lead actor Damien Molony, embraced everything our island has to offer, from sea swims to fresh Jersey Oysters, exploring our medieval castles and more. Aside from Bergerac himself, Jersey is truly a lead character of the show.

‘The modern re-imagining of Bergerac presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase our island to new audiences, who might not realise what an incredible place Jersey is – and less than an hour’s flight from the UK,’ Tricia says. ’We hope it connects with devoted fans of the original series, but also attracts a new generation of viewers who will be eager to visit the stunning Jersey locations featured in the show.’
