What is your latest TV obsession? For us, it’s Harlan Coben’s Missing You, a five-parter that landed on Netflix on New Year’s Day (along with The Traitors, of course). Centring on Kat (Rosalind Eleazar), this twisty drama delves into long-buried secrets and naturally bears resemblances to 2024’s Fool Me Once – which is also based on a Coben novel, produced by the same team and was released on Netflix on New Year’s Day. In Fool Me Once, our attention was captured by the glamorous mansions of our wealthy coterie of protagonists – and while Missing You is set in the same region, the settings are a little different. So where was Missing You filmed? Here’s what you need to know.

Where Was Harlan Coben’s Missing You Filmed?

While Harlan Coben’s 2014 novel is set in New York City, Netflix’s adaptation of Missing You was filmed in Manchester in the UK, and elsewhere in North West England.

The move follows 2024’s hugely popular Netflix/Coben series Fool Me Once, which was also originally set in New York in Coban’s novel of the same name, but was moved to Manchester for the TV series starring northwest local Michelle Keegan. Alongside the northern powerhouse city, Missing You was filmed in the surrounding countryside. ‘I live in the countryside, so the rural landscapes were very important to us,’ says lead writer and executive producer Victoria Asare-Archer.

The Stranger and Stay Close are two more examples of America-set Coben novels relocated to the UK for their TV adaptations, with 2019’s Run Away also in the works at Netflix HQ with Manchester-based Quay Street Productions. Following Fool Me Once and Missing You – both also produced by Quay Street Productions – the latter will probably also be moved to Manchester and stream from 1 January 2026. But who knows: Netflix could break its own trend…

Missing You Filming Locations

Is the scenery in Missing You feeling uncannily familiar? Here are the filming locations we see in Netflix’s Missing You:

  • Le Mans Crescent, Bolton
  • A derelict former orphanage in Stockport – which was transformed into the police station
  • Victoria Square, Bolton
  • Bolton School
  • A farm in Glossop (owned by dog breeder Titus [Steve Pemberton] in the series)
  • Parkgate, a village on the Wirral Peninsula where Kat goes searching for Josh (Ashley Walters)

Titus’ Farm

Titus’ very ominous farm was filmed across two locations in Glossop, shares Missing You star Steve Pemberton. ‘Obviously, Titus needs to be doing his shenanigans in a very remote place,’ he says. ‘We used two farms, one for the interiors and one for the exteriors.

‘Farms can be quite scary places,’ Pemberton notes. ‘One of the farmhouses was completely empty. Upstairs there was a bathroom with dead ladybirds and flies all over the floor. It hadn’t been touched. I think it’s just used for locations. That really helped the story.’

Reminiscing on the 1977 public information film Apaches which ‘scarred [him] for many years,’ Pemberton adds: ‘The machinery that they have on farms is so sinister. Machines with metal teeth and contraptions used for insemination. Everywhere you looked [on the farm used for filming], it looked like a torture chamber anyway. It had a great atmosphere, especially when we shot there at night. We have a climactic scene where there is all kinds of action and fire and weapons. It’s a great choice of location.’

This ominous rural feel was the goal for writer-producer Asare-Archer. ‘There is a version of the countryside that is wonderfully pretty and beautiful and full of gorgeous rolling fields,’ she says. ‘The cliché is: urban – bad, country – good, but we wanted to subvert that by exploring the darkness of the countryside in Titus’ world. That is not a pretty farm. It is a dark, messy, muddy place where horrible things happen. It rained horrifically on the day of filming one of the biggest farm scenes and it felt perfect. Very British.’
