The Skirt We’re Going To See Everywhere This Autumn

It was a hot pick during Fashion Week
If you found yourself in London back in September, chances are you saw flocks of Fashion Week attendees flitting between events. And, amongst the hustle and bustle of enthusiastic patrons, you also would have noticed one fashion staple in particular: a multi-coloured patchwork skirt. The cult favourite Chopova Lowena skirt has finally gone mainstream, and we can’t wait to see how the style set wear it.

The Chopova Lowena Skirt: Our Next Wardrobe Icon
If jelly sandals were the shoe of summer, then this patchwork kilt must be the skirt of autumn. Fashion’s best and brightest have been swarming all the capitals over the last two months, stomping down the streets of London, Copenhagen, Paris and New York – and wearing what has to be one of the coolest staples of the season.
We’re of course talking about the recycled folkloric textile skirt from London-based brand Chopova Lowena, which hangs from a chunky leather belt by carabiner clips.

Now a street style favourite, we’re seeing people wear the skirt everywhere. Its bold patterns and colours make for the perfect statement piece.
And we’re seeing people answer the call of Chopova Lowena. You’ll find the fashion set wear their skirts layered with oversized knits, chunky boots and a slick back bun, or paired with ballet flats and a clashing pattern blouse. On the dressier occasion, you might even see it teamed up with a pair of heels and a sports top. With this piece, anything really goes.
But where did it come from? The brand that kicked off the trend, Chopova Lowena, was founded back in 2017 by friends and fellow Central Saint Martins students Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena. Bringing together the duo’s British and Bulgarian heritage, the skirt was inspired by traditional Bulgarian designs in juxtaposition with modern streetwear.

The two have since made the brand a London Fashion Week staple, taking to the runway with looks inspired by folkloric references, sportswear, Bulgarian traditional dress and punk rock. Chopova Lowena is also known for its resourceful approach to fashion, using recycled and deadstock fabrics as well as vintage textiles sourced from Bulgaria and England to create its wares.
And despite its colourful collections being fantastic Instagram fodder each season, it’s Chopova Lowena’s signature skirts that continue to take the spotlight.
