What Are The Key Features Of Art Deco?
Art Deco entered the design scene in the 1920s, and it’s now widely regarded as one of the defining styles of the twentieth century. While you’re likely familiar with its hallmarks – think bold patterns, geometric shapes and jewel tones – you might not know that the term itself was coined at a 1925 expo in Paris: The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Art, to be exact.
This year marks 100 years since the emergence of Art Deco – and while it might not be quite as popular as it was in the 1920s, it remains a huge source of inspiration for contemporary design schemes. Here’s the rundown on this year’s Art Deco revival.

‘In 2025, we celebrate the centenary of the renowned 1925 Paris exhibition that introduced the term Art Deco, and this elegant style is set to flourish once again in the interior design landscape,’ says Alexander Shepel, interior designer and founder of the SHEPEL design group.
But why is Art Deco so beloved? ‘It can enhance an entire interior design scheme or be incorporated through small elements within a space,’ explains Alexander. ‘It also pairs beautifully with both contemporary and traditional designs.’
According to Alexander, modern interiors take inspiration from Art Deco by incorporating ‘geometric patterns, rich materials, and symmetry in exotic veneers.’
‘At SHEPEL, we celebrate the influence of Art Deco style in many of our designs,’ he continues. ‘We try to adhere to the movement’s principles of using the finest materials in combination with time honoured craftsmanship.’

How To Incorporate Art Deco Into Your Home
So, what kind of Art Deco designs can we expect to see this year? According to Neel Bradham, CEO of Parador, it’s all about ‘opulent spaces adorned with geometric patterns such as herringbone, chevron, and Parquet de Versailles-style floors. The modern geometry of these zig-zag and basket-weave designs accentuate the characterful grain of a warm, rustic wood, creating the perfect balance of past meets present.’
If you’re looking to add some Art Deco accessories into your interiors, you might want to start with pieces finished in ‘bold patterns, shimmering finishes and jewel tones,’ says Claire Pinckney, manager of design trend forecasting at Ruggable. ‘Think rich blues and deep burgundies paired with statement lighting and metallic accents, or high-shine surfaces like lacquered wood teamed with softer materials like velvet or textured plaster.’
