The Modern Surrealism Aesthetic, Explained

Take your interiors to a new dimension

Whether you feel like jumping on the joy drenching trend, experimenting with primary colours, or perfecting the curated clutter aesthetic, it’s safw to say that minimalism has taken a backseat in 2025. Boldness and whimsy is very much the way forward, and the latest twist on this colourful approach? Modern surrealist interior design.

What Is Modern Surrealist Interior Design?

As you might expect, modern surrealist interior design takes its cues from surrealist art, incorporating uncanny elements which subvert reality and invoke the power of the subconscious.

‘Modern surrealist interiors combine dreamlike, unexpected elements with contemporary designs, creating spaces that feel both imaginative and sophisticated,’ explains Jodie Hatton, design manager at Brintons. ‘In the textile space specifically, the once-radical visual language of surrealism – floating objects, metamorphic patterns, and impossible perspectives – is being translated into art for the floor.’

Jodie describes the trend as ‘a bold reimagining of domestic spaces. These pieces feature optical illusions and impossible landscapes that seem to ripple and transform beneath your feet,’ she continues. ‘It’s fascinating to see how such surrealist designs can become the focal point of a room while making it feel as though the space itself is unanchored from reality.’

Other components of modern surrealism include bold wall art and quirky accessories. Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin, picks out ‘textured wallpapers, wall murals and bold hits of colour,’ noting that art and quirky artefacts are also key: ‘It’s important for a design to both surprise and create harmony in a space, so any mismatching additions will add diversity and pace to the room,’ he states.

If you’re wondering exactly how to build a sense of modern surrealism in your own home, here’s the rundown on a few more fundamental elements…

Metallic Finishes

There’s nothing like a mirrored surface or a bit of chrome to transform a space into a dreamland. ‘Mirrors and metallic finishes will help you play with the sense of reality and reflection,’ explains Martin. ‘More is more in terms of layering textures and colours.’

It seems metallics are a growing trend across the interior design world, too. ‘2025 will see the rise of metallics in design,’ confirms Bo Hellberg, CMO at String Furniture. ‘Steel in particular adds a modern edge, offering durability and a sleek aesthetic that complements contemporary design.’

Curves

Wavy sofas and curved marble tables might now be the hallmark of sleek, minimalist interiors, but they’re also a great starting point for a modern surrealist design scheme. ‘Curved seating brings a sense of movement and surrealism to interiors,’ Martin highlights. ‘From an aesthetic perspective, it breaks up angular layouts, adding visual interest and a sculptural element to a space to make it feel more dynamic.’

Eclectic Wall Decor

While bold rugs underpin many modern surrealist interiors, wall art is just as important. As Martin notes, ‘there is more wall than anything else in any scheme so adding interest here is key – don’t be scared to select pieces that are a true representation of you and your personality. There are no boundaries to this look; the key to getting it right is removing the fear of doing it wrong.’
