Farmcore is back in full force
The style set have been busy sowing the seeds of the next big trend – and now, it’s finally come to fruition. Barn jackets are seemingly popping up everywhere this season, bringing with them a country style renaissance.
Hailey Bieber Taps Into The Farmcore Trend
When it comes to trends, Hailey Bieber knows how to spot a good one. The Rhode Beauty founder has taken her post-pregnancy fashion era to new heights by hopping on some of the biggest style trends – and the latest is the tried-and-tested barn jacket.
In her first public sighting since the birth of her son, Bieber was spotted on an evening stroll with friends in LA. The star of her outfit? An oversized tan suede barn jacket, featuring a black leather collar, wide sleeves and large front pockets. And, in true Hailey Bieber fashion, she styled it with black micro shorts, chunky gold earrings and a Saint Laurent leopard print handbag, with a pair of white crew socks and red flats on her feet. It was of course topped off with her signature slick back bun.

Being the trendsetter she is, it wasn’t surprising to see Bieber wearing such a trend-packed outfit – and it’s given us plenty of style inspiration for the season ahead.
What Are Barn Jackets?
As the name suggests, the barn jacket is rooted in farming history. While the exact origins are a little murky – some say the coat came from 19th century France, while others attribute it to the 1920s American workman – the general consensus is that it was favoured as a piece of sturdy outerwear for outdoor work. Specifically, on the farm.
But looking at a barn jacket, we can’t help but think there’s something quintessentially British about the design. With its boxy silhouette, cord collar, waxed fabric and flush of pockets, the design has been a staple of British country style for generations. Today even, you’ll still catch farmers, countryside lovers and members of the royal family wearing them on a daily basis.

Just take Glastonbury, for example. The UK’s biggest music festival is almost always awash with visitors decked out in wellies, denim and oversized wax jackets – usually Barbour jackets, a British brand that even offered an exclusive rental service at this year’s event.
And what about The Traitors? Reality TV show host Claudia Winkleman has taken British country style to new heights in recent years, thanks to clever, on-theme outfits co-constructed with stylist Sinead McKeefry. If there’s anyone that can convince us that farmcore is cool again, it would surely be this duo.
But now, the trend is ready to make the move from stable to street. Barn jackets are quickly becoming the most coveted outerwear style of 2024, with the style set teaming up theirs with dressed down shirts, jeans and sundresses. (No wellies in sight just yet, but maybe when rainy season sets in?)
Worn in both classic shades of navy, khaki, brown and hunter green, as well as more unconventional splashes of sand, cream and, in some cases, red, this is a trend that is on the cusp of evolution. It’s just a matter of waiting on the harvest.
