Behind The Purdey Autumn/Winter 24 Collection

British heritage label Purdey is known for bringing its rich history to the forefront of new collections – and its new Autumn/Winter 24 line is no different. Harking back to its sartorial beginnings on Mount Street in 1882, the British brand’s latest offering pays homage its longstanding reputation for impeccable craftsmanship and practical elegance. And from this foundation, it has been able to build up a collection that showcases old and new innovations, capturing the essence of British country living with a contemporary twist.

‘The mood for Autumn/Winter 24 is more Purdey than ever,’ notes the team. ‘Refined, effective and altogether timeless. It’s a collection that will not only see the wearer through the months ahead, but retain its quality and style for years to come.’

The Highlights

True to form, the Autumn/Winter 24 collection introduces fresh icons while staying faithful to the brand’s roots. The result? A wardrobe that seamlessly carries you through the seasons, marrying practicality with unmistakable Purdey flair.

‘This season we have taken inspiration from quintessential country and outdoor pieces, rooted in heritage styles,’ says Giles Deacon, Creative Director at Purdey. ‘The Kenwood and Melbury coats, for men and women respectively, are inspired by the classic Purdey field coat – with a four-pocket design, subtle checks and beautiful details.

‘Knitwear tells its own stories; take the Rosebank cardigan, for example, in a structured cashmere knit that emulates Purdey tweed and is 100 percent made in the UK.

‘And outerwear doesn’t get more versatile or elegant than a Purdey poncho, each embroidered with a JP monogram [a nod to brand founder James Purdey] that adds subtle, signature style. Above all, these are pieces that are a pleasure to wear out and about.’

Let’s take a look at the Purdey Autumn/Winter 24 collection in more detail…

New Outerwear Classics

Outerwear is always a highlight at Purdey, but this season the brand has gone above and beyond to showcase a range of new styles. Alongside an expansion of its classic field styles, the brand has also created a line of jackets and capes to suit any occasion (and conundrum the British weather can throw at us).

For Autumn/Winter 24, the Winchester Quilted Jacket takes centre stage. This versatile piece, crafted for both mens and womenswear, boasts a sophisticated walnut hue and cutting-edge technical cotton. Its lightweight HD wool wadding, sourced in the UK, provides unparalleled temperature regulation – a godsend for unpredictable British weather.

And for those who appreciate a seamless transition from country to town, the Kenwood Coat and Lancaster Range Coat are a must. Inspired by the iconic Purdey Field Coat, these smart yet practical pieces are a nod to British craftsmanship – with the Kenwood showcasing a subtle shepherd’s check houndstooth and a quilted internal lining that ensures warmth without heaviness, while the Lancaster features a stunning storm-blue wool woven in England, paired with a detachable technical lining for ultimate versatility.

New for 2024 is the wool tweed Raglan Field Coat. A testament to the brand’s commitment to British heritage, the Purdey Morar loch-inspired tweed boasts a subtle herringbone design with an autumnal overcheck, while the Sympatex membrane liner offers unparalleled functionality (waterproof, breathable, windproof, CO2 neutral and recyclable).

Over in womenswear, you’ll find the Melbury checked tweed and Wilton suede jackets. These pieces artfully combine traditional four-pocket designs with more tailored lapels, creating a silhouette that’s both classic and contemporary. And understated elegance comes courtesy of the double-face Portman Coat and the wool-cashmere Carrington Cape, which offer a less-is-more approach that’s sure to turn heads at any countryside soirée.

British Knitwear Icons

British knitwear is similarly rooted in heritage styles this season, with a luxurious 3D cable especially having central role across the collection. One of the main inspirations for Autumn/Winter 24, Purdey studied cable’s historied place on the UK coastline – and how it was developed out of necessity by women who knitted jumper to keep their fishermen husbands warm.

This hardy knit is used across both mens and womenswear, and Purdey sourced its yarn from the original Donegal Mill in Kilcar, Ireland, where the art of spinning, weaving, and knitting has been perfected since the 1800s. In doing so, the brand has created a series of sumptuously textured pieces that whisper tales of coastal heritage with every stitch.

From the rugged shores of Ireland, the journey of creation winds its way to Scotland, where skilled artisans breathe life into each garment. The Kirkstone Fair Isle Crew Neck Jumper, available for both gentlemen and ladies, pays tribute to the distinctive patterns born in the Shetland Isles, while the Hertford Herringbone Crew Neck Jumper cleverly translates classic British cloth into knitwear.

A commitment to practicality shines through in the Edinburgh Travel Merino range, featuring a crew neck jumper and polo shirt designed for the modern explorer. These pieces, adorned with the subtle ‘JP’ monogram, embody the brand’s ethos of understated elegance and functionality.

It’s All In The Detail

And what exactly is the ‘JP’ monogram? Developed from an evening slipper found in the depths of the archive at Audley House – which has been the historical home of Purdey since 1882 – the initials refer to brand founder James Purdey. You can spot the monogram throughout the collection – knits, shirts and even a few ornately carved domed horned buttons.

The finishing touches come courtesy of new accessories, including merino wool baseball caps, ribbed wool cashmere-blend socks, classic check cashmere and silk scarves made in the UK and ribbed beanie hats with more matching scarves.
