And can it really elevate your wardrobe?

Feeling a little blue? No? Well then, maybe you should look the part. A pop of colour has never led us astray – and while autumn is usually perfect for showcasing reds, golds and browns, it is blue that has captured our hearts this season. But not as you might think. Cue, the unexpected blue theory.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

The Unexpected Blue Theory, Explained

With roots in the interiors space, the unexpected blue theory trend is all about introducing pops of blue into areas of your wardrobe you wouldn’t usually think to place it. ‘From what we previously saw with the booming popularity of the unexpected red theory, and how this swiftly moved from the interiors space into the fashion space, I know we can expect the same for this similar trend,’ says fashion expert Adam Laws, from Baked Clay London. ‘It’s been largely influenced by the growing popularity of vibrant colours in fashion – such as cherry red and Brat green this summer.

‘It also follows the desire for individuals to express their personal style in unique and creative ways,’ he adds. ‘We know that blue, and cobalt blue in particular, has a timeless appeal. This makes it the perfect shade for statement looks and to go against the grain of the traditional autumnal palette. Definitely one for the creatives among us.’

And when it comes to channelling the trend, the first thing we’re reaching for is the accessories. Blue scarves, handbags, statement earrings, even sunglasses – the possibilities are endless. ‘Choosing an accessory that immediately draws in the eye is excellent,’ says Adam. ‘It’s the perfect way to push that “pop”.’

How To Style The Trend

The Bag

The easiest way to introduce the unexpected blue theory into your wardrobe is through grab-and-go accessories. In other words, you can’t really go wrong with a handbag. Wear it solo, or team it up with a matching pair of shoes for multiple pops.

The Tights

A pair of statement tights will never lead you astray. And where red was the bold colour of choice last season, now it’s all about the blue. For maximum impact, team them up with a neutral-toned outfit – or dial up the hues with a contrasting shade, like red or green, for a colour clash.

The Scarf

Your autumn staple just got cooler. Chunky knits aren’t just cosy, they’re perfect for spicing up an outfit with colour and texture. Simply throw on over your outfit for the day and you’re good to go.

The Hat

Another winning knit. Just like its scarf counterpart, a bright blue hat is an easy way to introduce colour to your AW24 wardrobe. A bonus with this one is that it also helps draw the eye back to your face, enhancing your features.

The Socks

Is there anything more unexpected than a secret sock? A quick flash of blue between shoe and cuff, this styling choice perfectly highlights the trend in action. But if you want a little more colour, don’t be afraid to pull in some blue elsewhere: tops, jewellery, belts and bags will all suffice.
