Our favourite off-duty bob cut is back

We’ve had them sleek, we’ve had them clean – but this season, we want our bobs messy and textured. Here’s how to get the look.

30 Bob Ideas For Your Mood Board

What Is A Textured Bob?

‘A textured bob is an evolution of the classic bob, but with more focus on layers and movement,’ explains Jack Merrick-Thirlway, Creative Director at Neville Hair & Beauty. ‘The goal is to create a soft, effortless feel. It’s less about precision and more about a relaxed, undone vibe, which is perfect for clients looking for something chic but low-maintenance.’

It’s this low-maintenance quality that Jack reckons gives the cut its booming popularity. ‘People are gravitating towards looks that require less maintenance, but still appear polished,’ he says. ‘The textured bob offers that balance – it’s versatile and easy to style, but still feels modern and fresh. I think the emphasis on individuality and authenticity also plays a role, as this style can be tailored to suit various personal aesthetics.’

How Does It Differ From A Classic Bob?

It’s all in the layers. ‘A classic bob tends to be sharp and blunt, with a defined edge, while the textured bob embraces softness,’ says Jack. ‘By adding layers, you create natural volume and dimension, allowing the hair to move freely. This layered texture makes it easier to style and gives a bit of an edge.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘This cut works best on fine to medium hair types, because the layers add the volume and texture those hair types often need,’ starts Jack. ‘In terms of face shapes, it’s really versatile. I find it works best, however, on round or square faces, as the layers help soften angles and balance the features.’

How To Ask For A Textured Bob In The Salon (& What To Expect)

‘Ask for a bob with soft, subtle layers that add movement and texture without making the cut too choppy,’ advises Jack. ‘You can also bring reference photos to highlight the features you like. Make sure to discuss your daily routine with your stylist, so they can adjust the length and texture to suit your lifestyle.’

As for creating the look, Jack tells us that, ‘The idea is to create movement without losing the structure of the bob itself. I use a combination of scissors and a razor to achieve the textured effect, ensuring the layers blend naturally.’

How To Style A Textured Bob

As Jack mentioned, this is a very easy, low-maintenance cut. If you want to let it air dry and do its thing, that can work – but for more hands-on styling, you’ll want to go big on volume. ‘I recommend a good texturising spray or mousse,’ says Jack. ‘Something that adds volume and grip without weighing the hair down. For a more lived-in look, you can finish with a spray to get that beachy, tousled effect. These products give you the perfect texture while maintaining shine and softness.’

Expect more personalisation with this look. ‘I think we’ll see even more customisation with the textured bob,’ muses Jack. ‘People might start playing with different lengths, experimenting with undercuts or bangs, all while keeping the same soft, layered look. The beauty of this style is that it adapts well to personal flair.’
