It was a royal reunion at yesterday's Commonwealth Day celebrations, with appearances from King Charles, Kate Middleton and more.

Too busy listening to the King’s playlist to tune into this year’s Commonwealth Service? Let’s get you up to speed. Commonwealth Day took place yesterday, celebrating the unity and diversity of the 56 member countries that make up the Commonwealth with a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey. The event is marked annually by the royal family – and this year saw the return of both King Charles and the Princess of Wales, who both missed 2024’s event due to their respective battles with cancer. And to celebrate Commonwealth Day 2025, Kate Middleton drew on a very special piece of family jewellery.

What Did Kate Middleton Wear For Commonwealth Day 2025?

Walking up to Westminster Abbey yesterday afternoon, Kate Middleton cut a vibrant silhouette in an all-red ensemble. The royal, who attended the Commonwealth Service with the Prince of Wales, stepped out in a made-to-order coatdress from Catherine Walker & Co – worn previously to the 2021 Together At Christmas carol service and the 2023 South Korean President State Visit – along with a matching Gina Foster pillbox hat, Gianvito Rossi suede pumps and Miu Miu bow-embellished clutch.

But it was the jewellery the Princess of Wales wore for the occasion that stole the show. Revisiting the royal archives, Kate Middleton donned the famous Collingwood earrings (handed down to her upon her engagement to Prince William) and a pearl choker from Garrard previously owned by Queen Elizabeth II.

The earrings were originally a gift to Princess Diana after the news of her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981, from the Spencer family’s jeweller, Collingwood (hence the name). Diana wore them a month before her wedding, as well as the day of – and years later, they’re now a staple in Kate Middleton’s wardrobe.

The pearls from the choker, meanwhile, were gifted to the late queen during her first state visit to Japan in 1975, who then enlisted the famous court jeweller to construct the stones into a necklace. Each side is comprised of three rows of diamonds that join at the top and bottom with marquise diamonds. Kate Middleton first wore the choker back in 2017 during a celebratory event for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary, and has worn it at multiple formal events since (the most recent being this year’s Commonwealth Day).
