When Is Mother’s Day?
In the UK, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 30 March 2025. (In the US, it’s on Sunday 11 May 2025.)
Why Does Mother’s Day Fall On Different Days In The US And UK?
A common cause for confusion on either side of the pond, Mother’s Day falls on differing days in the UK and US because of the event’s origins in each country.
In the UK, we observe Mothering Sunday, which is based on the religious tradition of visiting your ‘mother church’ on the fourth Sunday of Lent. (Lent itself is a major religious observance in the UK, spanning a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and reflection in the lead up to Easter.) Over time, our version of Mother’s Day has taken on a more secular meaning, focusing instead on celebrating motherhood – and aligning with the US’s take on the event.
In the US, meanwhile, Mother’s Day was popularised by activist Anna Jarvis, who organised the first official Mother’s Day on 10 May 1908. Rather than a solely religious observation, the event was created to honour mothers and celebrate relationships between mothers and their children.
So, while the purpose of both versions of Mother’s Day are now the same, each country still keeps the dates they were originally popularised with: on the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK, and the second Sunday of May in the US.
